I don't have AT&T service using that particular modem but I have seen similar test failures on other AT&T modems because the host that was being tested no longer existed. I suspect that is what you are seeing. If the test results give you an actual hostname, try doing manual nslookup, ping, and traceroutes to it and see if it fails those tests. If it only gives an IP address, then try manually doing a ping and/or traceroute to that IP address.

I have seen information that AT&T is/was using the IP address 12.83.49.81 for their 6rd, but I can not currently reach it via ping or traceroute from a Comcast, AT&T DSL, or AT&T 3G connection.

Yes, but apparently you did not want to believe it.

6RD or IPv6 Rapid Deployment over IPv4. Apparently at one time this was being deployes or perhaps just tested by AT&T and is no longer available. Ignore it.

sorry NetFixer, it is not that i didn't believe you, but me not being very tech savy i didn't understand the answer. so i will ignore the ip fail error. but something is going on as i keep getting, couldn't find server and have to click try again option several times before it finally loads the webpage. perhaps i am in the wrong forum seeking help for this problem. if so someone please direct a noob to the right one. again my apologies if anyone was offended and best regards.

In your original post, you did not mention anything about having actual internet access problems, only the hokey self test failure in the router.

This would indeed be the place to try to troubleshoot your internet access problem(s). Just provide some details and probably someone can help.

Right now, my best guess based on the limited information in your last post, is that you may be having a problem with your DSL router not functioning properly as a DNS forwarder (a common problem with many residential/soho class routers). Try putting your DNS servers directly into your PC instead of depending on the router's DHCP server to supply them. You can still use the AT&T AnyCast DNS servers because in my experience they are as reliable and fast as any alternative you can use.

I don't know what OS you are using on your PC(s), but here is a example image from the Windows XP PC I am currently using that depicts what you need to try:

Another possibility is that your PC(s) and/or browser(s) is(are) configured to use IPv6 as the preferred stack, and your router/connection does not support IPv6. That would certainly cause intermittent delays and retries until you finally only got IPv4 IP addresses for your browser (or other application).

If the DNS server change I suggested doesn't help, post back again with some details about how your PC(s) and browser(s) are configured.

sorry, i didn't mention problems in op. i wasn't sure what info was required so ran the test i described thinking it would be a starting point. i have ubuntu 12.04 os and firefox v14.0.1 browser with noscript and ghostery addons. i have checked in connection information and edit connections and see no way to select preferred dns server, maybe i am overlooking something though. old at&t 2wire modem quit working so at&t shipped me this net gear 7550 modem. old att 2wire only had iPv4 this one has iPv4 and iPv6. thanks for your help.

The router may support IPv6, but AT&T's IPv6 support is marginal, and most (if not all) of their DSL connections do not support IPv6. Remember, that test that failed? That was the router attempting to connect to the AT&T 6rd server (their IPv6 tunnel server) and I know that AT&T does not support native mode IPv6 for their residential customers, so that 6rd tunnel is all you are going to get from AT&T...and you don't have it.

However, based on your attached screen shot showing a failed connection to ubuntuforums.org, I checked and there is no AAAA DNS record for that hostname, so (at least for that site), an IPv6 conflict is probably not your problem.

Here are the Linux commands I used to check for the IP address used by ubuntuforums.org, and also to see if that host had an AAAA (IPv6) record:

webhost:/etc # host ubuntuforums.org ubuntuforums.org has address 91.189.94.12 webhost:/etc # host -tAAAA ubuntuforums.org ubuntuforums.org has no AAAA record

If your ubuntu system properly resolves the IP address for ubuntuforum.org, then your problem may not be DNS related either. However, instructions for changing your ubuntu system to use the AT&T AnyCast servers is tentatively shown below:

I don't have ubuntu installed on any PC, so I can't tell you what management script to use to change (or add) DNS servers to your NIC config (that sort of thing is vendor specific..SuSE calls their management script "yast", and IBM calls their AIX management utility "smit"). However, on almost any Linux installation, that information is stored in /etc/resolv.conf. On my SuSE Linux box, the relevant entries are:

nameserver 192.168.10.254
nameserver 192.168.9.2

(Those are the two local DNS servers that I use)

If you edit that file, and change the nameserver entries (or add them if they are not present) to

nameserver 68.94.156.1
nameserver 68.94.157.1

that should bypass the DHCP assigned entries (which probably point to your AT&T DSL router).

This site also has an »Unix and Linux forum and you can probably find some users there (and/or some FAQs) that can provide you with some ubuntu specific help.

If you can resolve the IP address for ubuntuforums.org using the "host" command, and if you can also ping ubuntuforums.org, then your problem is probably with your browser config, and this site also has a »Mozilla Software forum where you can go for Firefox specific help. I don't have Firefox installed anywhere either, and there are enough differences between Firefox and SeaMonkey (my primary browser) to make any advice/guesses I offered in regard to Firefox not very reliable.
