    • Those against whom there is a judgment unpaid for any moneys received by them, in whatever official capacity, due to the United States, to this state, or any canton thereof;
    • Those who are defaulters to the treasury at the time of the election, and the election of any such person shall be void;
    • Soldiers, seamen, marines, or airmen in the regular army or navy or air strength of the United States; and
    • Members of congress, and persons property any office of profit or trust under whatever foreign power, other state of the union, or nether the United States.

On February 6, Gov. Lee signed new legislative districts into police.[4] On December 14, the Senate Advertizement-Hoc Committee on Redistricting released five country Senate plans and 4 congressional plans submitted by the public.[5] The Tennessee House Select Committee on Redistricting voted to approve a proposal for House districts, HB 1035, on December 17.[6] The advertizement-hoc Senate commission released a land Senate plan on Jan thirteen.[7] On January 18, the Senate Judiciary Commission recommended state legislative proposals for consideration by the full Senate in a 7-2 vote forth political party lines, with all Republicans supporting the proposals and all Democrats opposing them.[viii] The Senate approved proposals for congressional and Senate maps in a 26-5 party-line vote on January 20.[9] On Jan 26, the Tennessee Senate approved the state House plan.[ten] These maps take effect for Tennessee's 2022 legislative elections.

Reactions

Senate Bulk Leader Jack Johnson (R) said, "We feel like the maps are legal and defensible both from a statutory and constitutional standpoint."[11] Rep. John Ragan (R) said the state legislative maps accurately reflect the growing population of the state. "We have worked well together in a bipartisan style to draw the lines of redistricting in a way that is fair and equitable and have invested much time and effort into ensuring that every district is properly represented," said Ragan.[12]

Rep. Gloria Johnson (D), who would non reside in her current district nether the new maps, said, "The supermajority in Nashville drew a ridiculous, partisan gerrymander to take my house out of the district I represent."[13] Rep. Torrey Harris (D), whose district was combined with that of Rep. London Lamar (D) said, "It sends a stiff message when you combine the 2 youngest representatives into 1 district, diluting a successful pool of young leadership."[14]

How does redistricting in Tennessee piece of work? In Tennessee, both congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn past the state legislature. These lines are discipline to veto past the governor.[15]

The Tennessee Constitution requires that state Senate districts "preserve counties whole where possible." Country statutes mandate that no more than 30 counties may be split across districts. Furthermore, state law requires that state legislative districts be contiguous. There are no such requirements in place for congressional districts.[xv]
